If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ve probably heard me mention this course before. I bring it up a lot — in emails, on calls, in the training resources on my site. So I finally sat down and wrote out the whole story of why.
Long before I was a trainer, I was a self-taught, read-everything, watch-every-video kind of dog owner. I figured that was enough. Then I took Karen Pryor Academy’s Dog Trainer Foundations course, and it was the first time I realized how much I didn’t actually understand about how dogs learn.
It was the first real, structured training course I’d ever taken — quizzes, hands-on practice with my own dog, the whole thing. It’s also the course that eventually led me down the path to becoming a Karen Pryor certified dog trainer myself.
Here’s the part I really want you to know: I don’t make a cent when you take this course. Karen Pryor Academy doesn’t have an affiliate program, so there’s no commission, no discount, no perk on my end. I recommend it because I’ve watched it work, over and over, for people who aren’t me.
I’ve had puppy owners take it before their pups ever come home, and they hit the ground running. I’ve also had owners I mentioned it to again and again who didn’t take it until much later — and every single one of them came back and told me they wished they’d done it sooner.
It’s not written specifically for livestock guardian dogs. It won’t walk you through a livestock introduction or tell you what to do about a dog chasing your chickens. But what I’ve seen, again and again, is that owners who take it figure out the LGD-specific stuff on their own — because they finally understand how to think about dog behavior in the first place.
