Your farm dog is going to look like a farm dog (and that’s okay)
What those lumps, scabs, and weird spots on your livestock guardian dog actually mean — and when to worry vs. when to just grab the chlorhexidine.
LGD Skin Problems: What’s Normal for Livestock Guardian Dogs?
Your livestock guardian dog lives outside 24 hours a day in a farm environment full of hay, weeds, allergens, and roughhousing siblings. So when you spot a scab, a lump, or a patch of irritated skin — take a breath. This post covers what’s completely normal for an outdoor working dog, what products to keep on hand, and when something actually warrants a vet call.

This is what 4 months of socialization actually looks like
See how Maremma puppies raised in a busy farm environment learn to stay calm — and why that foundation can’t be built after the fact.
LGD Puppy Socialization: How Calm, Confident Livestock Guardian Dogs Are Made
It had been loud here since 7 am — a full landscaping crew mowing every pasture, diesel engines and weed whackers running in waves across the property. My bucks in the adjacent pasture were not pleased. When I came around the corner on the golf cart at nearly 5 pm, I expected at least some of the puppies to be wound up too. Instead, I found them lounging in the grass like lion cubs on the savanna. Completely still. Completely relaxed. When they heard the golf cart, they rushed the fence to say hi, got their tossed treats, and went right back to their grass. That behavioral sequence — notice, greet, return to calm — is exactly what you want from a livestock guardian dog. And it’s not something you can teach. It’s something you build carefully, during the first few months of a puppy’s life. Here’s how it works.
