Hello Reader,
I hope you had an awesome Fourth of July! Mine was great, other than a scare when my husband texted me while I was at the fireworks show to say he thought he saw one of my Maremmas run down the street. Talk about heart-stopping. I was pretty sure it was the Great Pyrenees down the street, but I wasn’t happy until I got home to see for myself. And this is what I found.
Imagine my surprise when I walked in the gate to find 18-month-old Aurae perched atop the fence like a jaguar! She is a fence climber and was bouncing from one pasture to another and upsetting some of the other dogs.
It turns out it was the dog down the street (who gets out a lot) that my husband had seen. My dogs were all home, though a few of them, including Aurae, were agitated by the fireworks a neighbor was setting off.
Aurae spent the rest of the night in a kennel (with a roof!) on a nice dose of trazodone. And she wasn’t the only dog who was in a tizzy. Three of my dogs got Trazadone that night for similar efforts at escaping.
I learned a good lesson this year. Most of my dogs aren’t too bothered by the fireworks, so I’ve never worried much about them. But the ones who were stressed this year all have escape artist tendencies and seem to go into “flight” mode. So, from now on, I will plan ahead and let them sleep through the fireworks show.
If your LGDs (or any dog) are scared of fireworks, I highly recommend Trazadone!
Last week, I sent out a video showing how I acclimate young LGDs to new livestock. Now, I have expanded that video into a blog post, complete with lots of important details and some great photos of Prancing Pony Maremmas in training.
This is a very important topic and something I get asked about all the time by my Maremma clients and other LGD owners. So, I’m glad I finally got it all out of my head and on my blog. Enjoy!
