Maremma Sheepdogs and Children: Building a Safe, Loving Bond That Lasts

When It's Done Right, Your Maremma Becomes Your Child's Fiercest Protector and Gentlest Friend

The Maremma Sheepdog has a reputation as a serious working dog. But families who've raised one well know a different truth: a properly socialized Maremma is one of the most devoted, gentle companions a child can have. The key word is properly. The right foundation — starting before the puppy ever leaves the farm — makes all the difference. That's what we build into every Prancing Pony Maremma, and it's what I'm here to help you maintain.

Why Maremmas Are Exceptional Family Guardians — With the Right Start

The Maremma Sheepdog's instinct is to protect its family. When your children are part of that family, a well-raised Maremma extends that protective bond to them naturally. These are large, calm, confident dogs — not reactive, not jumpy, not easily rattled — which is exactly what you want around kids.

But here's what most people don't tell you: that calm, child-friendly temperament isn't automatic. It's built. It's built during the first 12 weeks of a puppy's life, through deliberate, consistent exposure to children — their sounds, their movements, their energy. Puppies who grow up learning that kids are safe and wonderful become adults who protect and love them. Puppies who miss that window can become wary, reactive, or unpredictable around children — even in the kindest home.

At Prancing Pony Farm, child socialization is a structured part of every litter's development. Our puppies are regularly exposed to children before they ever leave the farm. That's why clients like Caia's family — who introduced her to an unfamiliar child just days after arriving home in Hawaii — reported a Maremma who greeted that child with perfect, calm confidence. That's not luck. That's preparation.

"Our puppies are raised around children as part of our formal socialization program — not as an afterthought. By the time your puppy comes home, they already know children are safe, normal, and worth protecting."

Big Dogs, Big Responsibility: What Families Need to Know About LGDs and Kids

Let's be honest about something: Maremmas and other livestock guardian dogs are not the same as breeds traditionally bred and raised to be pets. They're powerful, independent, and wired to be protective. That's what makes them extraordinary at their job and even suitable as family companions in the right homes — and what makes proper education non-negotiable for families with children.

Every year in the U.S., an estimated 4.7 million dog bites occur. Children ages 5–9 are bitten most often, and the majority of biting dogs belong to the family or a friend. Dog bites aren't usually stranger-danger situations — they happen at home, with familiar dogs, during everyday interactions.

With LGDs specifically, there are a few patterns worth understanding:

Size and Exuberance: A friendly, excited Maremma can knock over a small child without any aggressive intent. Their sheer physical presence requires management, especially in the early months.

Protective Instincts: An LGD may misinterpret children roughhousing, squealing, or playing as a threat to one of their charges — including other children. They may try to "intervene" in what is actually normal play.

Wariness of Strangers: Even a Maremma who adores your kids may be cautious with visiting children they don't know. This isn't aggression — it's their nature — but it needs to be managed thoughtfully.

Resource Guarding: Some Maremmas are protective around food, toys, or resting spots. Children need to learn to respect this.

None of these things make Maremmas dangerous. They make Maremmas dogs who need educated owners. That's a very different thing — and it's something I can help you with.

How I Help Families Create Safe, Happy Relationships Between Kids and Maremmas

I'm a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and Licensed Family Dog Mediator through LEGS Applied Ethology — which means I've been specifically trained not just in dog behavior, but in the complex dynamics between dogs and families. I've also raised my own children and grandchildren alongside my Maremmas and other working dogs, so I'm not speaking from theory alone.

Here are the core tools I recommend for every family:

Teaching Kids to "Speak Dog"

Most dog bites involving children happen because the child missed the dog's signals — not because the dog gave no warning. Dogs communicate constantly. We just don't teach children to listen.

Some basics every child in your home should know:

  • A dog that's eating, sleeping, or chewing something valuable needs space — always
  • Stiff body, whale eye, yawning, lip licking, and turning away are "I'm uncomfortable" signals — not invitations
  • Running toward a dog, hugging around the neck, and staring into a dog's eyes can all feel threatening — even from a child who means well
  • Never approach an LGD who is guarding livestock, working, or eating

The good news: children are great learners when we give them the right information in the right way. The resources below will help.

Supervision Is Not Optional

No matter how well-socialized your Maremma is, children and dogs should be supervised during interactions — especially early on, and especially when livestock are present. An LGD doing their job and a child playing nearby can create unpredictable combinations. Your job as the adult is to manage the environment, not just hope for the best.

This is especially true when:

  • Visiting children who are unfamiliar to your dog are present
  • Your LGD is working near stressed or restrained livestock
  • Your dog is a new addition and still learning the family dynamics
  • Your children are young and haven't yet learned to read dog signals

You're Not Getting Generic Advice Here

I want to be direct about something: a lot of information about dogs and children online is generic, oversimplified, or just plain wrong. My approach is based on science — specifically applied ethology, learning theory, and behavior modification — not old-school dominance myths or wishful thinking.

My credentials in this area include:

  • Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) — gold-standard professional training certification focused on science-based methods and positive reinforcement
  • Licensed Family Dog Mediator (LFDM) through LEGS Applied Ethology — specialized training in complex family-dog dynamics, including child-dog safety
  • Certified DIAL Method® Guide — trained and licensed to deliver the DIAL Method, designed specifically for busy families managing dogs and children together
  • Nearly a decade of Maremma breeding experience with 200+ placements across the U.S., Canada, and Hawaii — including dozens of families with young children

When you work with me, you're not talking to a breeder who's guessing. You're talking to someone who has spent years studying this intersection specifically.

The DIAL Method® — My Top Recommendation for Every Puppy Family

The DIAL Method is a four-module video training program designed specifically for busy families navigating dog ownership. It covers everything from bringing your puppy home to managing behavior alongside kids — all in about 40 minutes of bingeable video.

I'm a certified DIAL Guide, and I recommend it to every single puppy family. Not as an optional add-on — as a prerequisite to success. The information it delivers in 40 minutes would take hours to gather from books, blogs, and YouTube. And parents don't have hours.

A quick note: DIAL was designed with companion dogs in mind, so some concepts will need to be adapted for working LGDs. That's where my consultations come in — I help you apply what you've learned to your specific Maremma and your specific situation.

Great Dog Safety Videos for Kids

If You're Worried About Your Dog and Your Kids, Let's Talk

I get calls and emails about this topic all the time. A new baby is coming and the family is nervous. A Maremma has started growling at visiting grandchildren. A puppy is knocking over a toddler every time they run outside. A client's dog is protective of the livestock when the kids are in the pen.

These situations are almost always manageable — but they need a thoughtful, individualized approach. Not generic internet advice. Not "well, that's just how LGDs are." Real, science-based guidance from someone who understands both the Maremma breed and family dynamics.

That's what my consultations are for.

My training consultations are $100 for up to one hour by phone or video. We'll look at your specific situation — your dog, your kids, your setup — and build a real plan together. Most families leave with a clear strategy they can implement right away.

If you're a current Prancing Pony puppy family, remember: you have lifetime support included. You don't need to book a paid consultation. Reach out by phone, text or email.

Looking for a Maremma You Can Trust With Your Children? Start Here.

Every Prancing Pony Farm puppy goes through our formal socialization program — which includes regular, structured exposure to children before placement. We don't just allow children around our dogs. We make child socialization a deliberate part of what we do, because the families we serve need to trust that their dog is ready.

Our puppies also come with:

  • Lifetime free training support (yes, for the life of your dog)
  • MSCA registration
  • A 2-year health guarantee
  • Health-tested parents (PennHip, OFA, DNA)
  • A matching process that considers your children's ages and temperaments

If you have kids at home and you're evaluating Maremma breeders, socialization history should be at the top of your checklist. Not just "raised on a farm" — that's not the same thing. Ask specifically: were these puppies handled regularly by children? Were they exposed to children's sounds, movement, and energy during the socialization window? At Prancing Pony Farm, the answer is yes.
