Description
Stuck With Your Guardian Dog? Let’s Fix That.
If you have a WORKING guardian dog, you might be dealing with livestock chasing, fence escaping, or a dog that won’t bond with what they’re supposed to guard.
If you have a COMPANION guardian dog, you might be dealing with excessive barking, roaming, aloofness, or a bored dog without a job.
Either way, you’re not alone. And you’re not failing.
Most LGD behavior problems stem from the same root causes: poor early socialization, unclear expectations, unmet breed needs, or well-meaning advice from people who don’t actually understand how livestock guardian dogs work.
What you need is someone who gets it—and can help you move forward.
What You Get:
45-60 Minute Phone Consultation
This isn’t a scripted training session. It’s a real conversation about YOUR dog, YOUR livestock (or home setup), YOUR property, and what’s actually happening day-to-day.
We’ll talk through:
- What’s working and what’s not
- Why your dog is doing what they’re doing (and what that tells us about their needs)
- If you have multiple dogs: How different breeds interact and what each one needs
- For working LGDs: Specific strategies for livestock integration and livestock guardian development
- For companion LGDs: How to meet their breed needs without livestock to guard
- Specific, practical steps you can take right away
- What to expect as your dog matures and settles into their role
- Resources, training tools, and next steps tailored to your situation
Follow-Up Email with Resources
After our call, you’ll receive:
- Links to helpful blog posts, recommended courses, and books
- Any additional resources specific to your dog’s situation
Expert Guidance from Someone Who Actually Knows LGDs
As a Maremma breeder and certified trainer who’s been working with livestock guardian dogs for years, I’ve seen just about every behavior challenge these dogs can throw at you—whether working or companion. I understand the difference between a behavior problem and normal livestock guardian dog independence. I know what these dogs need to thrive in BOTH working and companion roles—and I can help you provide it.
This Consultation Is For You If:
Working Livestock Guardian Dog Owners:
- âś“ Your LGD is chasing or harassing livestock instead of protecting them
- âś“ Your dog escapes, roams, or won’t stay where they’re supposed to
- âś“ You’re struggling with a dog that won’t listen or seems impossible to train
- âś“ Your livestock guardian dog isn’t bonding with your livestock
- âś“ You adopted/rescued an LGD and don’t know where to start
- âś“ You got a puppy from a backyard breeder and didn’t get the support you needed
Companion Livestock Guardian Dog Owners:
- âś“ Your LGD is excessively barking at everything
- âś“ Your dog is constantly trying to roam or escape
- âś“ Your livestock guardian dog is aloof and won’t bond with family
- âś“ Your LGD seems bored, destructive, or unfulfilled without livestock
- âś“ You need help channeling their protective instincts appropriately
- âś“ You want to understand how to meet their breed needs as a companion
All Livestock Guardian Dog Owners:
- âś“ You’re overwhelmed by conflicting advice and need direction from someone who actually understands these dogs
âś“ You have multiple dogs and need help managing different breeds together
Why This Works:
You Don’t Need More Commands—You Need Clarity
Most training focuses on obedience. But livestock guardian dogs aren’t supposed to be obedient lap dogs. They’re independent thinkers bred to make decisions on their own.
What you need isn’t more “sit” and “stay”—you need to understand how to set up your dog’s environment, routines, and expectations (whether working or companion) so their natural instincts work FOR you instead of against you.
That’s exactly what we’ll focus on during our call.
Common Issues We Address:
For Working Livestock Guardian Dogs:
- Chasing, playing rough, or harassing stock
- Not bonding with the animals they’re supposed to guard
- Preferring human company over livestock
- Aggression toward livestock or humans
For Companion Livestock Guardian Dogs:
- Excessive barking and territorial behavior
- Roaming, escaping, seeking a “territory” to patrol
- Aloofness with family members
- Boredom and destructive behavior without a job
- How to meet breed needs without livestock
Boundary & Containment Issues (Both):
- Fence escaping and roaming
- Not respecting property boundaries
- Leaving livestock to wander (working) or constant patrol behavior (companion)
Behavior & Training Challenges (Both):
- Won’t come when called
- Extreme independence
- Poor socialization from puppyhood
- Integrating a new LGD into an existing farm or pet home
- Managing multiple livestock guardian dogs
Multi-Dog Dynamics:
- Guardian dog and non-LGD dog conflicts
- Integrating different breed types on one farm or pet home
- Understanding why each dog responds differently to the same approach
- Setting up systems that work for all your dogs

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is this consultation specifically for livestock guardian dogs?
Yes. This is focused entirely on LGD behavior, training, and integration challenges—both working AND companion. I specialize in Maremmas but work with owners of all livestock guardian dog breeds (Great Pyrenees, Anatolians, Kangals, Akbash, etc.).
Do you work with companion guardian dogs, or just working LGDs?
I work with both! Many people have livestock guardian breeds as family pets or farm companions rather than active livestock guardians. Companion LGDs have unique challenges—they still have all those guardian instincts, but no livestock to protect. We’ll talk through how to meet your dog’s breed needs, channel their protective drives appropriately, and create fulfillment even without a working role.
Do I need to have gotten my dog from you?
Not at all. I work with LGD owners regardless of where they got their dog—whether from a breeder, rescue, or unexpected situation.
What if I’m not sure what questions to ask?
That’s totally fine. Most people start with “I don’t even know where to begin.” We’ll talk through what’s happening, and I’ll ask the right questions to get to the heart of what’s going on.
Is this a video call?
No, it’s a phone consultation. This keeps things simple and flexible—you can be outside with your dog, in your barn, wherever you need to be.
Will one consultation fix all my problems?
I won’t solve everything in one call, but I WILL give you a clear direction and specific action steps. Most people leave the call feeling relieved just to have a plan and understand what’s actually happening with their dog.
Do you offer follow-up sessions or packages?
Currently, I offer individual consultations. Many clients find that one session plus the resources I provide gives them what they need to move forward. If you need additional support down the road, you’re welcome to schedule another consultation.
What if my dog’s issues are really complicated?
That’s exactly why I’m here. I’ve worked through complicated situations with livestock guardian dogs for years—both working and companion. Even complex issues usually have practical solutions once we understand what’s driving the behavior.
I have other dogs besides my LGD. Will this consultation help with them, too?
Absolutely. While I specialize in livestock guardian dogs, my role as a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and LEGS Applied Ethology Licensed Family Dog Mediator means I understand how different breeds operate together on farms and in companion homes. We’ll discuss how your LGD interacts with your other dogs and how to set up your environment to support all of them based on their breed-specific needs.
