We did it — our very first Maremmas Made Easy group call happened this week, and honestly, it was even better than I expected.
First, a confession. If you got an email at some weird hour on Tuesday that seemed a little confused about when the meeting was actually happening — that’s on me. I wrote the reminder email late the night before, scheduled it to go out at 6 am, then decided at 4:30 am I’d just send it early so East Coast folks could catch it. I clicked what I thought was “send”… and it wasn’t. I didn’t realize it hadn’t gone out until about 30 minutes before the call started. So if that email landed in your inbox looking like it was announcing something that was about to happen right now — it was, just not on purpose. Still figuring out all the moving pieces over here, and I promise it’s part of the charm.
Despite my technical gremlins, four people showed up, and the conversation was genuinely great. One was Tom, one of my puppy clients — his Maremma Jimmy is a companion dog living with him, his wife, and their golden retriever in LA. Tom has owned LGDs as companions (formerly Kuvasz and now Jimmy) for three decades, and he’s always willing to jump on and share what life with an LGD breed actually looks like, day to day, working farm or not. (Tom is also living proof that the “LGDs can’t make good pets” line is simply not true.)
The rest of the group was a perfect snapshot of who these calls are actually for: someone who already has a few LGDs and just wanted to see what was going on and what the membership might offer — no specific questions, just checking things out; someone whose longtime livestock guardian dog (a different breed) recently passed, and who now has a young LGD looking for a partner; and someone still in the early research stages — she has her property, but hasn’t even gotten her fencing up yet, still a good ways out from being ready for a dog at all.
That’s really the point I want to make sure comes through: you do not need a Maremma, or even a dog at all, to join these calls. The membership is Maremma-specific by name because that’s my expertise and my passion. I breed them, I train them, I live and breathe this breed. But livestock guardian dog training and integration is largely the same conversation, no matter the breed, and working dog or companion, everybody’s welcome at the table.
We also had (and left in the waiting room a little too long!) a couple of folks who joined a bit late — my apologies to them. I’m still learning the ins and outs of running these calls smoothly, and I’ve already fixed that particular hiccup for next time. It’s a work in progress, and it’s going to keep getting better.
We’re doing this again next week — and I’d love to see you there, whether you have a dog, want a dog, or are just LGD-curious.
