Diana - Proven Livestock Protection, Ready to Work

4-Year-Old Working Spayed Female Maremma Sheepdog with Livestock Experience $4000

Some of the best LGD placements don’t start with puppies—they start with mature dogs who’ve already proven themselves in the field. Diana is a 4-year-old Maremma Sheepdog who’s developed into a reliable livestock guardian dog with real-world experience protecting goats and horses. If you need a dog who can start working immediately instead of waiting two years for a puppy to mature, Diana might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Why Consider an Adult LGD?

While many people naturally think “puppy” when looking for an LGD, adult dogs offer distinct advantages that make them the better choice for many situations:

  • Immediate Protection: Diana can start working with your livestock right away—no waiting through the puppy phase
  • Proven Temperament: You know exactly what you’re getting; her personality is fully developed
  • Established Skills: She’s already learned the job and has years of real-world experience
  • Lower Time Investment: No puppy training or supervision through the challenging teenage months
  • Mature Judgment: Adult LGDs make better decisions around livestock than young, excitable puppies

For farms that need protection now or owners who prefer skipping the puppy phase, a mature, proven dog like Diana can be the perfect solution.

Diana’s Background & Experience

What makes her special: She’s matured into a solid, reliable working livestock guardian dog who takes her livestock protection seriously. She’s had four years to develop her skills and judgment, and it shows in how she works.

Livestock Experience:

  • Proven reliable with goats, horses, mini horses, and mini donkeys
  • Exposure to chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys
  • Socialized with barn cats
  • Understands her job and takes it seriously
  • Works well in pasture settings
  • Appropriate livestock guardian dog behaviors

Diana’s Personality & Working Style

Diana is what we call a “confident livestock guardian”—she knows her job and isn’t afraid to do it. She’s developed into a dog with:

Strong Work Ethic: She takes livestock protection seriously and is naturally attentive to her charges

Independent Decision-Making: Like most Maremmas, she thinks for herself and doesn’t need constant direction

Mature Judgment: Years of experience mean she’s learned when to alert, when to patrol, and when to rest

Loyal Bonding: Once she knows you, she’s extremely devoted to her family and her livestock (she’s a people-friendly dog who enjoys human attention without being clingy)

Appropriate Confidence: She carries herself with the quiet assurance of a dog who knows her capabilities

The Right Home for Diana

Diana will thrive in a working farm environment where she can use her natural guarding instincts. The ideal situation includes:

Livestock to Protect: She needs a job to do—whether that’s goats, sheep, or other farm animals. As a friendly dog who really enjoys human interaction, she would also do well in a companion home.

Experienced or first-time LGD Owners: New or experienced LGD owners are welcome — we’ll guide you through the transition. The most important factor isn’t your experience level; it’s finding the right male companion for Diana and taking time with her acclimation. We’ll help you navigate both.

Secure Fencing: Like all LGDs, she needs proper containment to keep her on the job, but she is not an escape artist, so normal fencing is fine

A Working LGD Partner: While Diana might do well as a single LGD in the right home, she would do best as part of an LGD team, preferably with a male dog she already knows. She gets along well with Julian.

Long-term Commitment: Diana has many working years ahead of her and deserves a permanent home

Personal Consultation: Every LGD placement is unique. We’ll discuss your specific situation, livestock, property setup, and any existing dogs to ensure Diana is the right fit for your farm. Part of our commitment is making sure both you and Diana succeed together.
