Bear and Chief are two of our Maremma pups from 2023. They guard 300 free-range chickens and a small herd of cows on a 55-acre Texas ranch. They are hard-working LGDs but still have a lot of love to give their mom and dad. These dogs are living their best lives as family farm dogs. 💜

Circe had her litter of eleven puppies in July. This was a huge litter, especially for a first time mom. Circe was such a rock-star and an absolutely amazing mom. She loves her puppies so much and is a gentle and patient mentor to them. The pups are adorable and sweet and growing into great LGDs.

Last week I mentioned my husband was starting some medical treatments. I kept it vague because I wasn't sure how much to share, or if I should share at all.
But then I remembered something: when I had cancer 12 years ago, sharing my story was one of the most valuable things I did. It connected me with people going through similar struggles. It allowed others to support me. And it allowed me to support them back.
So here's what's happening:
My husband has stage 4 prostate cancer.
It's been a journey to get here. Last August, our family went to Disneyland - our first big family trip in years with some of our 6 kids and a bunch of grandkids. It was magical. You can read about that trip and why it mattered so much here.
But on the last day, my husband ended up in the ER, unable to urinate. He got a catheter and started months of what we now call "catheter hell" - tests, treatments, more tests. They kept saying it wasn't cancer.

I've shipped puppies more times than I can count, but I've never thought to do what I did this time — and I'll be doing it every time from now on.
When TSA inspects the crate, the puppy has to come out. It's a moment that could easily be stressful for a young dog in a completely unfamiliar, noisy, overwhelming environment.
But this 5-month-old Maremma? He was curious. Calm. And the moment he sniffed out my treat bag, he was ready to work.
We did offered sits right there in the terminal. Click, treat toss, reset, repeat. He was completely focused on me — not the noise, not the strangers, not the chaos of a busy airport.
That's what positive reinforcement training does for your dog. It gives them a job. It gives them YOU as a safe point of focus. And it builds the kind of confidence that carries them into brand new situations without falling apart.
He's in Oregon now, safe and settling in beautifully. This little training session at the airport was one of the last things we did together before he left — and I'm so glad we did it. 🐾

I want to talk about something that doesn't get enough attention in the LGD world: training your dog outside of your usual environment.
Most of us work with our dogs at home, in the pasture, in familiar spaces. And that's important! But the real test of a well-trained dog is how they handle somewhere brand new — somewhere with unfamiliar smells, sights, sounds, and energy.
This 5-month-old Maremma had never left his pasture before this vet visit. And he passed with flying colors — curious, calm, and completely happy to offer behaviors and earn treats while horses and pigs wandered nearby.
The secret? Clicker training gives dogs a familiar, positive activity to fall back on when the world gets overwhelming. Instead of scanning for threats or shutting down, they look to you. They engage. They feel safe.
We do this with every puppy at Prancing Pony Farm. And moments like this one are exactly why.

Romeo, one of our eight month old Maremma puppies, is a bit of an escape artist. Luckily he's not too hard to deter. But that doesn't stop him from checking the gate on a regular basis. You never know....
