Your Maremma Match: A New Quiz to Help You Find the Right Age Dog for Your Farm

If you’re considering a Maremma Sheepdog or another livestock guardian dog, one of the first questions you’ll face is whether to start with a puppy, an adolescent dog, or an adult livestock guardian dog.

The truth is that the best age livestock guardian dog depends on your farm setup, your livestock, and your experience level.

To make that decision easier, I created a free 2-minute Maremma Match Quiz that helps you determine which age dog is most likely to succeed in your situation.

After nearly a decade of breeding and placing Maremma Sheepdogs, I’ve had this conversation with hundreds of farmers. The quiz is designed to replicate that conversation in a quick, easy format.

If you’ve ever reached out to me about getting a Maremma Sheepdog, there’s a good chance we’ve had some version of this conversation:

You came in with a clear idea of what you wanted — a puppy, probably — and somewhere in the middle of our conversation, it became pretty obvious that maybe a puppy wasn’t actually the best fit. Or the opposite: you were leaning toward an adult or an older dog because you thought puppies were “too much work,” and it turned out that puppies were a better fit for your farm than you thought.

I’ve had this conversation hundreds of times during my free Maremma Discovery Calls. And I love having it, because helping people figure out the right fit is genuinely one of my favorite parts of this work. But I also know that not everyone is ready to jump on a call, and not everyone has the time to dig through blog posts looking for answers.

That’s why I built Your Maremma Match — a free, two-minute quiz that helps you figure out which age category of Maremma Sheepdog is the best fit for your farm, your lifestyle, and your experience level.

What Age Livestock Guardian Dog Should You Get?

The best age livestock guardian dog depends on your farm, your experience with dogs, and how quickly you need the dog to begin working.

In general:

Puppies (12-16 weeks)
Best for owners who want to raise and train a livestock guardian dog from the beginning. Puppies bond strongly with livestock but require months of supervision and training.

Older Puppies (4–6 months)
A good option if you want some early training and socialization started, but still want a young dog that can easily adapt to your farm.

Adolescent Dogs (6–24 months)
Often, a great middle ground. Adolescents are past the fragile puppy stage but still young enough to integrate into a new livestock environment.

Adult Livestock Guardian Dogs (24+ months)
Adult LGDs are best for farms that need a dog ready to work sooner or owners who prefer to skip the puppy training stage.

Because every farm is different, the Maremma Match Quiz helps determine which age category is most likely to work best for your situation.

Why the Age of Your Livestock Guardian Dog Matters

Many people shopping for a livestock guardian dog have already decided they want a puppy before they even start looking. And honestly? I get it. Puppies are adorable. There’s something incredibly appealing about the idea of raising a dog from scratch and watching them grow into your farm family.

But here’s what I’ve learned after nearly a decade of breeding and placing Maremma Sheepdogs: the age of dog you want and the age of dog that will work best for you are not always the same thing.

A puppy is a significant time investment. They need active supervision around livestock for months and structured early experiences like proper livestock guardian dog puppy socialization. They go through adolescence — a phase that can be equal parts hilarious and maddening. They require patience, consistency, and a lot of grace.

An adolescent dog — somewhere in that six-to-eighteen-month range — might actually give you the best of both worlds. Some basic foundation is there, they’re past the most delicate puppy phase, but they’re still young and adaptable enough to bond with your animals and settle into your routine.

An adult dog brings experience and reliability to the table. If you need a livestock guardian dog who can go to work fairly quickly, or if you want a mentor dog for a younger pup, or if you simply don’t have the bandwidth for the puppy phase — an adult can be exactly the right answer.

None of these options are better or worse than another. They’re just different. And the right choice depends entirely on you.

What the Quiz Actually Does

Your Maremma Match walks you through a series of questions about your farm setup, your experience with dogs, your livestock situation, and your lifestyle. It takes about two minutes, and at the end, you get a personalized result that tells you which age category is likely the best fit — and why.

I built out five different result categories so the answers are actually meaningful and specific, not just generic. Each result page explains what that age category looks like in real life, what the challenges are, and what to consider next.

It’s the closest thing to getting on a call with me and talking through your situation — without having to schedule anything. (And if you do want to get on a call with me taking the quiz first can prepare you with even more info before that call.) You can book a call below or a link to do so will be emailed to you after you take the quiz.

Who This Quiz Is For

The quiz is genuinely useful if:

  • You’re new to Maremma Sheepdogs (or livestock guardian dogs) and aren’t sure where to start
  • You’ve been assuming you want a puppy but haven’t really thought through what that involves
  • You’ve been told adult livestock guardian dogs are “easier” but aren’t sure if that’s true for your situation
  • You want to add a second or third livestock guardian dog to your existing team and aren’t sure what age makes the most sense
  • You’re planning ahead for a future LGD and want to start thinking through the options

And even if you’re already on my reservation list or you’re a current client — I’d encourage you to take it anyway. I’ve had clients take it just out of curiosity and come back with really good follow-up questions they hadn’t thought to ask before.

What’s Happening on the Farm Right Now

Speaking of puppies, adolescents, and adults — I happen to have dogs available in all of those categories right now, which makes this feel like a particularly good week to launch this quiz.

My youngest litter just hit three weeks old this week. Their eyes are open, they’re starting to move around with purpose (if “falling over repeatedly while barking at nothing” counts as purpose), and they are genuinely the most heart-melting little things. They won’t be ready to go home until 12 weeks, so there’s still time — but three weeks is also when I start paying close attention to personalities, and these babies are already showing some real character.

I also have puppies in the four-to-five-month range — past the most intensive early phase but still young, still moldable, still in that sweet spot where they’re bonding hard with their livestock and learning the job.

And I have some adolescent and adult options available as well, including dogs with real working experience who are ready to get to work on your farm.

This is genuinely one of the more varied selections I’ve had available in a while, which means the quiz results might actually point you toward something you hadn’t considered.

TLDR

If you’re trying to decide what age livestock guardian dog to get, here’s the short version:

• Puppies require the most supervision and training
• Adolescents offer a balance of trainability and maturity
• Adult dogs can provide faster working reliability
• The best choice depends on your farm, livestock, and experience

The Maremma Match Quiz walks you through this decision in about two minutes.

You Don’t Need Experience. You Need the Right Start.

Here’s something I say in almost every single conversation I have with someone who’s considering their first livestock guardian dog:

Nearly every family I’ve ever placed a Maremma with was a first-time livestock guardian dog owner.

If I had to put a number on it, I’d say 95% — and that might even be low. Over the course of nearly a decade and close to 200 dogs placed, the vast majority of those families had never owned an LGD before. A handful had never owned any dog at all.

And they are doing great.

I know that might be hard to believe if you’ve spent any time in LGD forums or Facebook groups, where it can feel like you need years of experience and some kind of specialized knowledge just to be allowed in the door. That’s not actually true — or at least, it doesn’t have to be.

What those families had wasn’t prior experience. What they had was:

A puppy that was properly started. Months of intentional socialization during the critical window. Exposure to livestock, to sounds and equipment, and chaos, to being handled, confident, and adaptable. That foundation is the breeder’s job — not yours.

A breeder who stayed in the picture. Questions come up. They always do. Dogs are not robots, and farms are not predictable. What made the difference for those 95% of first-timers wasn’t that nothing ever went sideways — it’s that when it did, they had someone to call. Someone who knew their dog, knew their situation, and could help them work through it. They had me.

That’s not something you can buy from a breeder who doesn’t offer support. And it’s not something experience alone gives you.

I say this because I know that for a lot of people, the age question — puppy vs. adolescent vs. adult — gets tangled up with the confidence question. You think you want an older dog because you’re worried you can’t handle a puppy. But sometimes a puppy is actually the better fit for your situation, and what’s really standing in the way is just that you don’t feel ready.

You’re more ready than you think. And the quiz can help you sort out which age is actually the right fit — separate from the fear.

“You don’t need to come to me knowing everything. You just need to be willing to learn, ask questions, and take action on the advice I give you. I’ll help you with the rest.”

FAQs

Q: Do I have to take the quiz to learn about your dogs?

A: Nope! The quiz is just one option. You can also go straight to the website to learn about the program, browse available dogs, or request info directly. The quiz is there for people who aren’t sure where to start.

Q: What are the age categories in the quiz?

A: The quiz identifies which stage is the best fit for your situation — puppy, older puppy, adolescent, adult, or a specific combination — and explains what each stage involves so you can make an informed decision.

Q: Does taking the quiz put me on a waitlist or commit me to anything?

A: Not at all. The quiz is purely educational. It gives you information; what you do with it is entirely up to you.

Q: I already know I want a puppy. Should I still take it?

A: Yes, actually. Even if you’re confident in your answer, the quiz might surface some considerations you hadn’t thought through — and it’s good to confirm you’re going in with realistic expectations.

Q: I want an adult dog. Do you ever have those available?

A: Yes. I have adult and adolescent dogs available on a case-by-case basis. The best way to find out what’s currently available is to reach out or check the website.

Are Maremma Sheepdogs Good for Beginners?

Maremma Sheepdogs are a great choice for beginners in the right circumstances, but they are very different from typical pet dogs. As livestock guardian dogs, they were bred to work independently and make decisions while protecting animals.

For new owners, the biggest factors that influence success include:

  • Whether they were properly socialized with livestock and humans as puppies, with the most important period being from 3 to 16 weeks old
  • Whether or not you get your puppy from a breeder who provides ongoing (ideally lifelong) support after the sale
  • A commitment to providing supervision and positive-reinforcement-based training
  • Your expectations for how quickly the dog will become reliable

For many first-time owners, choosing the right age livestock guardian dog is just as important as choosing the breed itself.

That’s exactly what the Maremma Match Quiz is designed to help you figure out.
